Variacs are available in single phase and 3 phase.  A 3 phase variac has multiple cores and a matching number of brushes.  3 phase Varaic are ganged together one axis so when you turn the knob, all the brushes turn at once. Three single phase variacs can be connected in parallel so you can basically have a 3 phase variac.

3 phase variac are available up to 480 volts and can be over 300 amps.  3 phase variac can be an open delta configuration or a gang wye configuration which controls the three phase wye voltages.  The open delta 3 phase variacs are used for controlling the voltage of delta three phase voltage source.  When using the gang configuration, and if your system has a neutral or ground between the source and the load, the neutral should be connected to the terminals of the 3 phase variac.

3 phase variac are trouble free devices that are used for controlling AC voltage.  They are toroidal in design with wire wrapped through the center hole and around the toroid.  The variable output  variac voltage comes from moving a conductive slider along the windings.  The slider has a carbon contact that rotates through the doughnut hole or toroid.  The slider moves through the winding and the output voltage varies. The key is that variacs use inductance and not resistance in reducing voltage. This is the main reason why you can have higher output voltage than the primary voltage on a variac.

3 phase Variac Applications

3 phase variac, in most applications, a full turn of control knob varies the output voltage, from zero to 17% above the connected overvoltage operation.  Therefore, the light, heat output, speed or the torque of the load is varied from zero to rated or above. The variacs can be used as a color-temperature control, for calibrating voltmeters, ammeters, and watt meters. They are widely used in laboratory and engineering facility to test equipment.
