Types of Variacs

The two basic types of Variacs are the bench top and open frame.  The Variacs are efficient, trouble-free devices for controlling ac voltage.  The name Variac comes from the unit's main function - "very ac" and came from General Radio's registered name for its continuously adjustable autotransformers.

Variacs are also called variable transformers, auto transformers, dimmer, variation transformers, voltage regulator and etc. They are used mainly to adjust voltages on quality control testing, electronic equipment burn-in, life-tests, low  voltage performance evaluation, D.C. rectifier/regulator analysis and in many industrial and engineering companies.  They are widely used in laboratory and industrial as components to control voltage, current, power, heat, speed, light, and electromechanical force.  Unlike most transformers, the Variac has a transformation ratio that can be continuously and smoothly changed so the output of the unit can be controlled from zero to line voltage or even higher.

Types of Variacs - Bench Top Variacs

The bench top variacs is a ventilated metal shield that contains the winding, it has a control knob on top.  These types of variacs are widely used in service shops, engineering design facilities, industrial academic laboratories, manufacturing operation and field installation teams.  The bench top is usually round like a soda can and sits on a counter top.   Most models have a on/off switch, a fuse, one or more AC outlets, a line cord and sometimes a current or voltage meter.  Bench top variacs with its portability makes them valuable where actual operational parameters need to be ascertained.

Types of Variacs- Open Frame Types

These types of variacs are typically panel mounting in a equipment racks or as a part of some larger piece of equipment.  The inductor and electrical connections are exposed, but the operating principles are the same as the bench model.
