Variacs are construction with a toroidal or doughnut shaped magnet steel core.  On this core, a single layer of enameled covered magnet wire is tightly wound.  A track is machined around the toroid periphery.  A carbon brush is positioned to rotated around track, producing variable output voltage to separate terminal.

Variacs are construction mostly as auto-transformers and the units are wired to produce a higher voltage out than applied as input voltage.  Usually the increased voltage is around 15 percent above the applied voltage, where as output can be varied between 0 volts and 15% above the input voltage.  The input voltage in some cases is more than 15% lower than the maximum turns, providing an even greater step-up output voltage. Variacs are efficient, trouble-free devices and are used to control AC voltage and  heat output, light intensity, motor speed, and the output of various power supplies.  The name Variac comes from the unit's function "vary ac" and it is a continuously adjustable autotransformer.  Another benefit the Varaic provides is a smooth and continuously transformation ratio so the output of the unit can be controlled from zero to line voltage or even higher.
