Variac Transformer

Variac Transformer provide a voltage-adjustable source of AC electricity. They are usually plugged into a wall outlet and they have a knob-controlled output that can range from - 0 volts to about 140 VAC, depending on how the winding is connected.  Variacs different from a true transformer, it does not provide isolation from the line voltage. Therefore, it is not suitable for powering low-voltage devices.  Variac Transformer are used in tube audio for powering experimental circuits and for equipment testing and repair, and not as a permanent source of voltage power.

How Does a Variac Transformer Works?

The Variac Transformer is shaped like a doughnut (toroid) with wire wrapped through the center hole and around the toroid.  Unlike other transformers with isolated input and output windings, variac transformers have a single winding that serves as both the input and output source. Variacs can be best described as a tapped inductors, where the" tap" is a conductive slider that moves along the length of the inductor. The slider is equipped with a carbon contact that rotates through the doughnut hole or toroid. The enamel insulation on the winding wire is removed when the carbon makes contact with the winding, so the contact forms a circuit through part of the winding.

In a Variac Transformer if the tap is set for 50 percent, the input current will be half the output current.  One thing to remember is a Variac Transformer that the maximum current rating really is the maximum.  For example, a small  120V-2.25 Amps-270VA the single winding is the same diameter wire from end to end, so the maximum current at any voltage is 2.25 A.  A regular 270VA transformer with  a 60V output would be able to supply 4.5A. Manufacturer recommendations maximum current should be followed closely to prevent damage.
