Variac Voltage on the average can increased voltage by 15% above the applied input voltage.  Variacs wiring configuration yields a higher voltage out than the input voltage.  In some cases input voltage is more than 15% lower than the maximum turns, which provides a greater step-up output voltage. The following is a good example of this:

  • 120 volts to 280 volts

  •  480 volt transformer can be configured to 560 volts from a 120 volt input.

A Variac is a a form of an auto transformer but by exposing part of the winding coils and making the secondary connection through a sliding brush, an continuously variable turn ratio can be obtain, which allows very smooth control of voltage. Variacs applications include controlling voltage, current, power, heat, speed, light, and are used in many industrial and laboratory applications.

Variacs are transformer offering alternating, adjustable current  but only the output voltage is adjustable.  Variac Voltage is higher on output rather than input voltage.  Variacs voltage are divided into two parts by the impedance between the inputs. The output voltage is determined by the divided impedance connected to the output.
